How Do Colours Relate to the Learning Environment?

Colours influence our perception and our emotional state. They awaken emotions and memories and contribute to our sense of well-being. We have done this and developed colour design ideas for educational facilities: Terra, Aqua and Dune. The harmonious, nature-inspired colour combinations support visual habits and convey a feeling of safety and security, resulting in a better and calmer learning environment for children to stay in.

How does a well-thought-out and appropriate colour choice contribute to the learning environment?

  • Children feel secure
  • Enable playful learning in a prepared environment
  • Support and direct mood and concentration through colourfulness
  • Create structure and give orientation to the pedagogical staff
  • Create an atmosphere that supports the individual educational areas
  • Increase pedagogical staff's working quality and efficiency and reduce the workload.

Colour ideas AQUA - Like a day by the seaside

Inspired by the blue sea, the golden sandy beaches and everything you can find during a walk on the beach, Aqua brings the vacation vibe indoors. At the same time, the various shades of blue and nature can convey more than tranquillity, security, and contentment. Blue is also known to stimulate creativity and inspire new problem-solving strategies. It encourages thinking outside the box. In interior design, the Aqua colour works particularly well for children ages six to ten in school settings. The colours make the rooms more spacious. This is especially advantageous in entrance and waiting areas.

Colour idea TERRA - Stay grounded

The Terra colour idea is closely connected to nature and makes any room lively. The warm red and orange tones are friendly and invigorating, increasing attention and motivation. That is why they are particularly suitable for groups and playrooms. The brown, earthy tones convey a calm and grounded feeling, building a closeness to nature and a sense of security. The neutrality of the earth colours also leaves room for unique decorating ideas, an all-around feel-good guarantor for any room.

Colour idea DUNE - Today we go green

The Dune colour idea brings freshness to the room, symbolising growth and regeneration and expressing harmony and happiness. Green is well-known for being a relaxing, stress-relieving colour. Paired with water blue accents and a grey cushion reminiscent of the stones, the calming effect is complete! They are the perfect earthy colours that bring depth to green and blue. Therefore, the colour idea Dune is great for restrooms, staff rooms or classrooms.

Choosing Colors based on the User, Usage and Size

The room's average length of stay should also be considered when designing the colour scheme. If it is short, a strong colour can be used. If, on the other hand, it is long, pastel shades are preferable, as they contribute to a calming mood in the room. The overriding rule is that large areas should be subtle in colour. On the other hand, smaller regions are well suited for colour accents if they are coherent in the overall context.

Finally, the function of a room has an important influence on its colour design.

  • warm, activating colours for groups & playrooms

  • cool, calming colours for sleeping rooms

  • light green tones for concentration and learning readiness

In addition, these effects can be influenced by the saturation level of the colour - the stronger the colour, the stronger its effect.
